Tour Green - Kenai Fjords

Tour Green: As the longest running wildlife cruise provider in Alaska, we know better than anyone how delicate the environment we operate in can be, and how important it is to protect the beautiful scenery and incredible wildlife that we get to see every day. That's why Kenai Fjords Tours is proud to be going full speed ahead with the Denali Green Tags' Tour Green program.

What is it? Denali Green Tags' Tour Green program is a partnership between wildlife tour companies and environmental organizations designed specifically to mitigate the damage done to the environment by tourism. Every Green Tag purchased (either on one of our boat tours or at Denali Green Tags) helps offset the carbon emissions from your trip by paying to replace burning fossil fuels used for energy (like coal and gas) with clean renewable sources of energy (like wind and solar power) on our nation's power grids.

When you purchase a $2 tag, you will receive a sticker as a thank you for your participation in this program. Not only is the sticker a nice addition to your scrapbook, cool to put on top of your laptop or a new addition to your cars bumper, it represents your commitment to create clean energy.  Each $2 tag is the equivalent of 150 miles of travel in a standard car. Green Tags directly fund continued development of new, renewable energy which ultimately protects our natural environment.

What else can be done? While carbon offset is an important step towards ensuring the protection of the beautiful areas that we explore every day, it is only part of the solution. Below are some of the other things that Kenai Fjords Tours is doing to protect the environment, along with some suggestions on how you can participate in your own daily routine.

What We're DoingWhat You Can Do

Recycling

Kenai Fjords Tours is committed to recycling at every level of our operation. From the oil in our boats to the paper that print on, we are doing our part to decrease waste.

Try to reuse and recycle as much of the things you use as possible. From the packaging that your products come in, to the oil you use for cooking, see what you can get the most out of before throwing out.

Purchasing Decisions

From the eco-friendly compact fluorescent light bulbs that we use in our office, to the simple green cleaner that we use on our boats, Kenai Fjords Tours makes the environment a priority when making purchasing decisions.

Be conscious of the environmental effects of the products you buy for your house. Different brands of seemingly small things, like light bulbs and cleaning products, may seem may have very different effects on the environment. Green means GO

Modernization

Since we've started running cruises, Kenai Fjords Tours has been setting the curve in terms of eco-friendly tour boats. Every one of our engines meets or exceeds EPA emissions standards, and we are currently updating our fleet to become even more energy efficient with the addition of our voyager class catamarans.

Modernize your own appliances. Whether it's looking into more fuel efficient automobiles, or even cleaner burning washers and dryers, we can all make a positive difference towards keeping the air we breathe clean, and preventing global warming.

Alternative Energy

Our heating, lighting and cooking needs at Kenai Fjord's Wilderness Lodge located on Fox Island are powered largely by renewable sources like Solar and Wind.

Look into ways you can support alternative energy, whether it's something small, like riding a bike instead of driving, or something larger, like putting up solar panels on your roof, every little bit helps.

Movement and Advocacy

Our participation with the Tour Green program is part of our larger commitment to the protection of the environment, which includes partnerships with the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, and other research and conservation projects both locally and nationally.

Get involved. Whether you're working locally to clean up and protect your own backyard, or writing your representatives to demand national and global solutions, your voice is important. All of us can make a difference by being advocates for the environment.

When you spend every day with the incredible wildlife that we do out in Kenai Fjords, it's hard not to feel the need to protect it, and to want to ensure that future generations get to enjoy it as much as we do. If you haven't seen it, come out on one of our tours and we're confident you'll feel the way that we do about protecting the environment. And now that we've partnered with Denali Green Tags, you won't have to go any farther than the boat's galley to help do your part.
